King Carlos III will use recycled garments at his coronation

On Saturday the Coronation of King Charles III of Great Britain at 74 years in the Westminster Abbey in London. One of the particularities that the event will have are the clothes that the monarch will use: will wear outfits that were once used by their predecessorsincluding his mother and grandfather.

The king decided to load the gala with religious and historical symbolism as a way of promote environmental sustainability recycling what already exists.

He Buckingham Palace explained that many of the items he will carry, such as crowns and sceptres, are from centuries ago, but Carlos also will reuse some garments made for coronations since 1821 “for the sake of sustainability and efficiency.”

Among the clothes that will reappear will be the coronation glove made for his grandfatherGeorge VI, used for his coronation in 1937.

During the ceremony, the glove, made of white leather embroidered with gold metal thread, is placed on the right hand of the monarch as a reminder that the sovereign must be careful when collecting taxes.

Another is the “Colobium Sindonis” from his grandfather, a white linen tunic with a belt for swords, avoiding the tradition of making a new one. As well as, the monarch will wear during the service the “supertunica”, a long coat of golden silk with sleeves that was made for the coronation of King George and worn by later monarchs, such as Elizabeth II.

On this will take the Imperial Mantlemade of cloth of gold, silver, and silk, and originally produced for the coronation of George IV in 1821.
