The Japanese authorities evaluated this Saturday the damage of the powerful earthquake that shook the center of the archipelago yesterday, and although it is maintained that there was only one death, 29 people were injured.
The 6.5-magnitude tremor struck the central Ishikawa region at a depth of about 12 kilometers yesterday afternoon, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).
The agency registered up to 55 aftershocks on Saturday morning, some of them powerful, and warned that heavy rains could cause landslides in the area.
At least 29 people were injured, the national crisis management agency reported on Saturday. In a previous balance, he reported 23 wounded, the AFP agency specified.
A Japanese government spokesman, Hirokazu Matsuno, reported a death yesterday and noted that several buildings had collapsed.
The victim died after falling from a ladder in Suzu, on the coastal area of the Sea of Japan, according to a crisis management official in this city told AFP.
According to images from NHK television, several wooden houses were damaged, with windows and roofs smashed. A part of a sunken mountain could also be seen.
Earthquakes are common in Japan, which is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an extensive arc with high seismic and volcanic activity.
However, the archipelago has strict building regulations for buildings to withstand strong shaking and earthquake emergency drills are routinely held.
