The man was initially flown to the Klagenfurt clinic with life-threatening injuries, where he died during the night. Another woman was injured.
The 75-year-old was traveling with two companions in the car on the Friesacher Bundesstraße (B317) from Althofen towards Klagenfurt. At around 8:40 p.m., she got into the first lane of the two-lane oncoming lane at Sand (municipality and district of St. Veit an der Glan) for an unknown reason. An oncoming 21-year-old driver was able to avoid the acceleration lane at the last moment. A 23-year-old driving behind him was no longer able to do this, he collided head-on with the oncoming car.
He was trapped in his vehicle and had to be freed by the fire brigade with rescue shears. After initially successful resuscitation, he was flown to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where he died during the night. The 75-year-old driver and the 71-year-old woman in the back seat suffered such serious injuries that they died in the vehicle. Another female passenger (65) was taken to the emergency room at the Klagenfurt Clinic after initial treatment.
