Mattos is already in China to negotiate the opening of new markets

The minister of Livestock, Agriculture and Fisheries (MGAP), Fernando Mattos, is already in China to negotiate new market openings for Uruguay, as well as changes in meat export conditions.

The holder of the portfolio was specially invited by his Chinese counterpart, in charge of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairsfour years after the last official visit of a MGAP minister to the Asian country, according to Blasina y Asociados.

The trip will have a total length of 20 days, and the first part of the mission will be focused on the thriving southern region known as “Greater Bay Area”made of Hong Kong, Macao and Guangdong Province (Guangdong).

The objective of Uruguay is to recover the time lost with China after the end of the sanitary restrictions by Covid-19 in the Asian country, which affected international trade between the two countries.

In this regard, one of the main interests of the MGAP is to manage the export of cellulose, grains, wool and handicraftsas well as trying to get China to resume purchases of wool with a larger diameter, since Uruguay is facing a problem of “an important stock in the hands of producers” for which a solution must be found.

Likewise, the ministry maintains “expectations of improve access to products such as poultry meat, mondongo, and lemons“; and also seeks to advance in the procedures for the authorization of sorghum, as well as to negotiate the sanitary protocols required for the rape and the wheat.

Another point of relevance during the mission will be to update the current sanitary and phytosanitary protocols, as well as the conditions for the entry of products of animal, vegetable, and fishing origin.

What will Mattos’ schedule be like?

The head of the MGAP was received yesterday by the executive head of Hong Kong, John Lee, who left the doors open to continue receiving and channeling imports of quality agricultural products from Uruguay.

Mattos also met with the Hong Kong Chamber of Commerce, in a meeting focused on promoting the greater arrival of Uruguayan products to this region. The day in the region closed with a visit to the Trade Promotion Agencywhich highlighted the potential that exists for Uruguayan products to continue arriving in Hong Kong and that from there they can be distributed to different regions in China.

The MGAP highlighted that there is a great field ofe business development for the local wine sector as well as poultry, key objectives pursued in this visit. While from the Chinese region they looked very favorably on the possibility of carrying out a “Uruguayan Day” in this region, soon, as an event to promote Uruguayan products and the country brand in that region.

Today, for its part, the ministerial delegation will participate in the Trade Promotion Seminar and will visit the Science and Technology Centerin Shenzhen, province of Guangdong, where he will also hold a hearing with local authorities.

On Wednesday he will participate in the inauguration of the ANUFOOD of Shenzhen, in addition to the inauguration of the stand INAC and also from the wine stand of INAVI. and will attend a Meat Forum.

Thursday, meanwhile, will be the opening day of the International Fishing Fair Shenzhen, with various activities planned in this framework; and on Friday, Mattos will hold a hearing with Henan authorities.
