the mayor of Montevideo, Caroline Cosse, announced yesterday at a press conference measures that arose from the study of water in 15 polyclinics, where bottled water will be delivered to a target audience because points were found where the water exceeded the recently increased parameters of SBI; Faced with this, the Minister of Public Health, Karina Randoresponded that the IMM measurements were made incorrectly.

The delivery of prescriptions for bottled water will last, according to Cosse, while the measure of the Executive power for 45 days to raise the salinity parameters in the water. “We understand that, to the population most exposed to this type of thing, the mayor’s office cannot look the other way. We are making a great effort. We are going to maintain this measure at least while the present exception authorized by the Executive Power is valid. by 45 days“said the mayor at a press conference.

The measure reaches a certain target audience made up of infants less than 6 months who need water to consume supplements, pregnant with blood pressure problems, as well as adults with hypertension and kidney failure.

The results of the studies

At the end of last month, the OSE board had taken the step of increase the amount of sodium in the fluid from 200 milligrams per liter to 280 mg/L, while from chloride they went from 280 mg/L to 450 mg/L. While last Friday, the Ministry of Public Health (MSP) authorized a new increase in the measures, which will go to 400 mg/L and 700 mg/L respectively.

Faced with this, this Monday the community chief of Montevideo reported that the water would be studied in 15 polyclinics – of the 26 owned by the city – to be able to account for the salinity of the water and determine if it is drinkable or not. Cosse remarked that of the 15 points there is only one that does not exceed the established maximum limit of 200 mg/l. While, of the rest, there are two that exceed the exception authorized by the Executive Power which doubles the upper limit at 440 mg/litre.

Rando’s answer

The Minister of Public Health, Karina Rando, responded to Cosse’s statements and determined that the tests were carried out wrong way. “The measures of water they are not made in your place and is stable throughout the day. Measures are taken at different points of the account that supplies the metropolitan area and, therefore, they are not exactly the same measures,” explained the minister.
