From June 23rd to July 2nd, along the Summerauerbahn, those artistic impulses are threading together that are intended to form a high-quality, one-week festival of contemporary art. At the Festival of the Regions, urgent socio-political issues such as climate protection, equality and solidarity with the weaker are addressed under the motto “Highest Railway”.

“The task of leaving something lasting in the region has accompanied the Festival of Regions since it began 30 years ago. That should also be the case with the highest railway,” says Festival Managing Director Otto Tremetzberger. More than 100 actors want to make a contribution with their contributions during the festival week.

focus days

The stations selected by the program board for the Festival of Regions range from Linz Central Station to Horní Dvoriste: Steyregg, St. Georgen/Gusen, Lungitz, Gallneukirchen, Gaisbach-Wartberg, Kefermarkt, Freistadt and Summerau. “In order to make the festival clearer for our guests, there will be a focus day for most of these festival locations,” explains Renée Chvatal from the festival team. The opening train ride on June 23rd from Linz to Horní Dvoriste will be followed by three main days in Freistadt, on June 27th Gaisbach-Wartberg will be the focus of the festival, on June 28th Kefermarkt, on June 29th Steyregg, on June 30th St Georgen/Gusen and Gallneukirchen on July 1st and 2nd. The Summerauerbahn will also be integrated into the festival with special trains.

As the hub between the festival management and the numerous cultural workers from the region, Janina Wegscheider – known for her work in the textile dyeing plant in Gutau – is involved in the festival: “Through the mixture of regional, national and international artists and the involvement of the population, we want Giving impetus, but also initiating dialogue.”

A good example of this is the focus day in Freistadt, on which not only the symposium “verflechtn” in the Salzhof but also an occupation of the Böhmertor by the Fraustadt Freistadt initiative is scheduled. During this time, the gate was renamed Frauentor and the adjacent Böhmergasse was renamed Frauengasse. Also a reference to the recent discussion about too few women’s names in the local street network.

Mighty greenhouse dome

The “vegetable laboratory”, including its greenhouse dome with a diameter of eight meters, will not be overlooked under any circumstances – both before and after the festival. This is where the “VegLab” will be stationed: a platform that allows you to get involved with growing vegetables without any prior knowledge. Interested people can find useful plants that grow in our region and find out what they need to thrive. This environment is intended to encourage people to engage creatively with topics such as food production and nutrition.
