More than 87,000 Uruguayan households are poor

Uruguay has 87,000 homes below the line, represented by more than 350,000 people where the poverty rate reaches, mostly children and adolescents in the country, with females being the most affected.

He Development Studies Center (CED) published the report “Poverty in Uruguay, beyond income” where they revealed, from the Continuous Household Survey (ECH)data on households and people below the poverty line, below 25% of that line – stipulated by the National Institute of Statistics – and data on those who exceed it.

The newsletter reflects that 350,000 people are below the poverty line – represented by 87,000 Uruguayan households -, while 270,000 they are 25% above the line, which is reflected in 72,000 homes. For their part, 3.2 million Uruguayans are above the poverty line, representing the majority of households in a total of 1.2 million.

The gap is in gender

The poverty rate of people according to their gender, shows that most age groups have more poor females than male-identified people. In the only group where poverty has the same percentage is in the ages of 0 to 5 years.

For its part, the group where the greatest difference in the poverty rate is in the age range of 25 to 29 where women have a percentage of 14.2%while men occupy the 8.9% This group is followed by 30 to 39 year olds, where women represent 11.3% and men 8.5%.

Poverty in Montevideo and the interior

The three poorest departments are Cerro Lago, Rivera and Montevideo with a percentage of 19.5%, 15.9% and 12.8%, respectively. These are followed by the departments of Treinta y Tres with 12%, Artigas with 11.7%, Rocha with 11.4% and Salto with 10.3%.

In the third group are Paysandú, Lavalleja, Tacuarembó and Colonia, which are below 10%, followed by Rio Negro, Maldonado, Canelones, Florida and Soriano. In last place are Durazno, Soriano, San José and Flores.
