Karl Frais completed a doctorate in German, sports science and sociology in Salzburg. His professional career led him into state politics from 1977 to 1980 as head of housing advice at WAG Linz and later as secretary and office manager to the former social democratic deputy governor Karl Grünner. These positions enabled him to put his passion for social issues and fair educational opportunities for every child in good schools into practice.

From 1991 to November 2011, Karl Frais held the important position of SPÖ club chairman in the Upper Austrian state parliament. His expertise and his empathy for people were highly valued across party lines. Karl Frais was a designer, a social and democratic humanist.

In addition, Karl Frais did a lot of voluntary work, including as President of the Austrian Friends of Nature.

In 2012, Karl Frais was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold for his exceptional political and honorary services to the Republic of Austria. This high recognition honors his commitment to fair cooperation.

Karl Frais leaves behind his wife and a son.

SPÖ Upper Austria Chairman of the Provincial Council Michael Lindner honors the deceased as a great lover of people and nature:

“With Karl Frais we are losing a leading personality in Upper Austrian social democracy, who we will miss as a loyal friend and wise adviser. We will carry on his legacy for fair educational opportunities and respectful cooperation in his spirit in our commitment. With passion and care – so as he exemplified to us for many years as one of our greats.
