A local family of hoteliers is currently applying for a new building there. In a petition, the St. Wolfgang citizens’ initiative called for “No to the maximum construction of the Bacherlwiese”, which Mayor Franz Eisl (ÖVP) and members of the municipal council also signed, according to a broadcast from the municipality on Monday. In 2006 there was already approval for a five-storey hotel project, including a park and seminar area, from an international company, but this never materialized. The right to build on the approximately 40,000 square meter meadow was then transferred to Wohut Wolfgangsee Hotel und Tourismus GmbH. In November 2022, they applied for their new building – a three-storey hotel with outbuildings – to the Gmunden district authority in accordance with nature conservation law. If the smaller project is now approved without further ado, the door and gate are wide open for a gradual expansion up to the originally approved size. Citizens’ initiative and community want to prevent this and also the Upper Austria. Environmental ombudsman, which did not rate the construction project positively, sees this danger.

Municipality is working on creating a new planning area

“With the current spatial planning framework, the area in question would sooner or later be built up to the maximum – regardless of how little or much the current project now consumes from this maximum variant,” said the Upper Austrian. Environmental Ombudsman in their statement. From their point of view, a new planning area should first be decreed, zoning and development planning updated, the traffic situation and the associated planning adapted and only then should a project better adapted to the landscape be carried out. She submitted the application to suspend the nature conservation procedure in question.

The municipality is working on the creation of a new planning area. The municipal council in June or July should come to a corresponding resolution. As of May 15, the citizens’ initiative can refer to around 1,170 supporters, 371 from St. Wolfgang. The aim is to prevent a monster hotel project on the lake shore and to preserve the public bathing area created in 2021. It is currently leased annually, and a long-term agreement is being sought here, according to the community.
