The government analyzes a National Emergency System for the water crisis

The mayors Yamandú Orsi and Carolina Cosse were summoned by the Ministry of the Environment to evaluate a joint action.

The water crisis is making the Uruguayan government take last-minute measures and this Monday a meeting will be held between the environment portfolio and the mayors of Montevideo and Cannelloni, Carolina Cosse and Yamandú Orsi, to organize a National Emergency System to treat the water deficit that the entire metropolitan area has compromised, while from the mayor of the country’s capital they will carry out this Monday the delivery of water drums.

The scarcity of water caused that from the National Administration of State Sanitary Works (OSE) it is decided to increase the salinity of the fluid in order to make the service in the metropolitan area perform until the end of the month. This, in addition to bringing controversies within the government, caused people with certain health conditions to have to stop drinking running water.

Faced with this, the Municipality of Montevideo will carry out this Monday the delivery of 4000 drums – of which half were donated – to the 23 polyclinics that are part of the department, delivering 170 units for each establishment. From the mayor, they explained that health professionals will be in charge of determining who will be the recipients of the water and the time of day in which it has to be consumed. The priority will be lactating people with less than six months who consume supplements with water, pregnant women with chronic hypertension and people with hypertension or kidney failure.

Within the framework of government actions to deal with the water crisis, this Monday at 4:00 p.m. the Ministry of the Environment summoned the mayor of Canelones, Yamandu Orsi, and the mayor of Montevideo, Caroline Cossetogether with other leaders such as the mayor of Lavalleja, Mario García, and representatives of OSE, the Ministry of Public Health and the Ministry of Social Development to coordinate the National Emergency System in the face of water deficit.
