His celebratory cantata was commissioned on May 1, 1862 to accompany the ceremonial laying of the foundation stone of the Linz Mariendom, the place that Anton Bruckner refers to in his famous motet “Locus iste” – Bishop Manfred Scheuer calls the close connection between the Linz Cathedral organist at the time and the New Linzer under construction cathedral in memory. 161 years later, on June 7th, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz under its chief conductor Markus Poschner will give its first concert in the Linz Mariendom in the footsteps of its namesake. With Bruckner’s “Fourth”, the Romantic, it supports the “Pro Mariendom” initiative for the renovation of the cathedral.

Hopeful cathedral debut

“The Fourth is very inspired by the infinity of space that materializes in stone,” says Poschner, explaining his choice of the “Romantic” in E flat major WAB 104 (version 1878/80). As the well-informed son of a church musician, he was “a bit afraid of the acoustics, you have to play music completely differently than in a concert hall”, which, however, could mitigate one thing: “As many visitors as possible,” the chief conductor courageously invites into the sacred halls.

Their renovation is “on schedule”, says former governor Josef Pühringer. The tower work should be completed by autumn, and the windows in Schlierbach that were shot through during the war are currently being renovated. The “Pro Mariendom” initiative will continue until the end of 2024. (cash)
