Thiem actually wanted to get as much match practice for Roland Garros and of course points as possible in southwest France. Already in Mauthausen he failed too early in the semi-finals. His next assignment is now at the French Open. Thiem is currently the first player outside of the main competition at the major in Paris. But with the next cancellation, the two-time French Open finalist and four-time semi-finalist slipped into the field. However, several players are considered to be badly hit, above all, of course, Rafael Nadal. It can therefore be assumed that Thiem will save himself the qualification. However, he would play it if necessary, he had recently assured.

On Wednesday, in very windy conditions, there was no second win for Thiem in the second duel with Moutet – neither in Bordeaux nor against the world number 67. Moutet acted extremely skilfully and varied with a lot of cut changes and stops and, among other things, two serves from below, which also became an ace due to Thiem’s position far behind. Thiem started with a break in the opening game as desired and pulled away to 5: 3. But he had to give up his service at 5:5. In the tie break he fell 2:5 behind and at 3:6 he was only able to fend off two set balls. After an hour, Moutet had set one in his pocket.

It was over after 95 minutes

In the second round, Thiem looked even more tense, immediately conceded a break and fell behind with a second 0: 3. From this point onwards, the increasingly flawed Lichtenwörther was clearly on the losing road. After 95 minutes, Thiem’s second and last appearance in Bordeaux was over.

This is a real disappointment for the 17-time tournament winner, who really wanted to hit Paris with the challengers in Upper Austria and France and also climb up the ATP ranking. After the strong performance in the second round of Madrid against Stefanos Tsitsipas (6: 7 in the third set, note), one could have hoped for a return to the road to success for the 2020 US Open winner. New coach Benjamin Ebrahimzadeh now has some work to do off the pitch. After all, the German-Iranian’s first goal was to have Thiem “back on track” by Paris.
