Conaprole exports, at risk due to the union conflict

The Association of Workers and Employees of Conaprole (AOEC) announced new measures of force in the framework of the union conflict that they have had with the dairy company for weeks, and which has as its epicenter the Villa Rodriguez. Now, and after the general assembly of workers was held, the union decided to move forward with strikes and mobilizationsand the possibility of applying measures affecting exports.

The new stage of the conflict was announced by AOEC through a statement, in which they demand “immediate reinstatement of workers” of the Rodríguez plant and announce that as long as said reinstatement does not take place, the union declares itself in conflict, while continuing to work according to regulations since May 9.

This was decided in the assembly, where they also voted to add three hours of unemployment per week while they wait for the minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Pablo Mieres, respond to the urgent request for a meeting, with which the workers seek to inform you about the conflictive situation and “its probable aggravation.” They also asked to meet with producer unions, Parliament, municipalities, Departmental Boards and Ministries related to the sector to communicate the status of the conflict.

In this sense, Dairy industry exports grew by 17% so far in 2023with whole milk powder and cheeses driving the improvement with increases of 31% and 24% in April, respectively, according to the latest report from the National Milk Institute (Inale).

In terms of income, this meant 52.3 million dollars for whole powdered milk shipments during the past month —a cumulative 195.4 million dollars in the year—; and $9.2 million for cheese exports in April —a cumulative $41.6 million.

These are the specific figures that would be at stake if AOEC decides to implement measures that directly affect the company’s dairy exports.

Conaprole’s position and the risk of the raw material

The company, for its part, assures that the workers “have always been called to work, but have irrationally opted for forceful measures seeking to impose an indefensible staffing.”

In an internal statement, Conaprole informed the workers that it asked the union to postpone yesterday’s assembly, but that “unfortunately its decision was upheld” and that for this expressed, “without foundations, that there is no risk of loss of raw material and they have only granted minimum guards”, according to Subrayado.

“At all times, information on the critical situation regarding the management of the reserve and quality of raw material has been made transparent to the union, elements that justified the request for the postponement of the related assembly,” they said.
