“Portofino is a jewel and you have to behave accordingly,” commented Mayor Matteo Vaicava.

But that’s not all. The mayor has signed an ordinance establishing a kind of “red zone” between the city center and the beaches. Tourist groups are forbidden to stop here. “We don’t want to ban selfies, we just want to ban gatherings in certain places for security reasons.” From morning until 6 p.m., tourists can enter the main square, but they are not allowed to stop or form gatherings, otherwise fines ranging from 65 to 275 euros will be imposed. The measures particularly affect cruise tourists who are taken from the port city of La Spezia to the cliffs of the Cinque Terre and Portofino for a few hours. Up to 30 buses per cruise ship set course for Portofino.

Slippers ban

Since last year there has also been a dress code in Sorrento. The popular seaside resort in southern Italy has introduced fines of up to 500 euros for walking around the city in a bathing suit. This also applies to men who stroll “topless” through the village. There is a ban on slippers on the hiking trails in the Ligurian tourist region of Cinque Terre: the reason for this are the many injuries.
