A misfortune rarely comes alone: the past week was one to forget forVorwarts Steyr. First, the arbitral tribunal made the highly questionable decision to grant SV Stripfing a license for the second division, then striker Tobias Pellegrini was injured in Sunday’s game and to make matters worse Grazer shot Steyrer 2-0 down again in the final phase in the table cellar.
Missed penalty
Both teams felt the importance of the game. The first half of the game was disorganized and characterized by nervousness. The missed penalty by the hosts after a foul by Alberto Prada also fitted well into the picture (7th).
In the first half, Steyr missed a sitter after a counterattack: Kubilay Yilmaz played perfectly into Tobias Pellegrini’s run, who shot the goal alone. But he put the ball too far in front of him and missed goalkeeper Maric. Immediately after this action, Pellegrini had to be replaced injured and was replaced by Tolga Günes.
In the first quarter of an hour after the change of sides, Sturm II dominated, with multiple chances, the red-white back team was just able to prevent a goal (47th). Goalie Nik Polster was there when Toth shot (57th). After that, the Red and Whites recovered and had a good chance of taking the lead themselves. Günes put the ball just over the goal after a Stangl pass from Murat Satin (65′).
When a goalless draw became apparent in the final phase, the young Grazers still struck. A shot by Schendl was deflected into the goal by David Bumberger to make it 1-0 (84′). Three minutes later, Ilic scored to make it 2-0. The Styrians celebrated enthusiastically, the guests from Steyr crept off the field with hanging heads. You can’t deny the efforts of the Madlener-Elf, but the performance against Sturm was a relapse. The most recent games had given us so much hope. But yesterday in Gleisdorf there was once again a lack of determination in the opposing sixteen and callousness when there were few chances. The players didn’t bring much vigor or sparking ideas either – so it won’t be possible to stay up in the league.
Vienna comes to Steyr
Coach Madlener and his lads don’t have long to lick their wounds: the race to be or not to be in the second division is still very tight. Already on Friday in the home game against Vienna (kick-off: 7.15 p.m.) the Red and Whites have to show a different face and literally tear themselves apart for a win. Then there is the chance of a real final in the last round on June 4th away against Admira.
