The work of the Central Railway will end in November

The Minister of Transport and Public Works, Jose Luis Falero, confirmed that the work of central railway – a significant element for PSU 2 and its logistics – will be finished by the end of November of this year together with some of the demands of the Municipality of Montevideo regarding traffic and complementary works that generated controversy this week.

In conversation with the Underlined media, the minister announced that they are closing the new planning for completion of works and assured that they have had “difficulties that are public knowledge” referring to the Durazno bridge, which is today each of the level crossings at the entrance to Montevideo. “All of this has somehow led to us having to review the date that was for tomorrow, May 24, completion of works within this year,” Falero explained.

The minister referred to the conditions imposed by the mayor on some complementary works. “There is an excessive request from the departmental government that came to us last week that we are not willing to do urban work above the estimate we had, we had even discussed it with the mayor herself that she was in the vicinity of the 40 million dollars“, remarked the minister.

From the ministry, they assured that they are evaluating the placement of airline tickets and elevators for people with disabilities. However, they requested that the maintenance be carried out by the mayor of Caroline Cosse.

The accusations of the National Party and Cosse’s response

Yesterday, the deputy for the National Party, Daniel Martinezin an interview with Radio Carve, expressed the Municipality of Montevideo is requesting for the approval of the work a list of “more than 20 works that are of significant quantification” such as level crossings, elevators, tunnels and works related to the reformulation of the project.

The deputy described some works as “blackmail” since some works have to do with the framework of the urbanization. “The Municipality of Montevideo requests works that were not foreseen, like blackmail, to give permits for other works. It adds a cost that the State is not willing to be able to assume, ”said the deputy.

To this, the mayor responded “she was quite surprised” by the accusations of the National Party since since 2021 the Ministry of Transport and Public Works presented a technology for barrier times that required double, where, after a study, an agreement was reached to change the project.

“The mayor requested mitigation of the effects because double barrier times mean lines of three or four blocks of waiting in various places. Therefore, mitigation actions that they had been talking about and had agreed with the ministry are required. I don’t know why this is due, but we continue to work with the same seriousness”, Cosse stated.
