The price gap with Argentina grew on the coast and is already 144%

The price gap between Argentina and Uruguay reached 144% in May, showed the latest Border Price Indicator Report, prepared by the Economic Observatory of the Catholic University in Salto.

The document, which you accessed scope.comshows that it is 59% cheaper to buy in the Argentine city of Concord than in the Uruguayan city of Salto. Seen from the opposite point of view, the indicator reflected that Salto is 144% more expensive than Concordia.

The data shows an increase from the previous measurement, carried out in March, when Uruguay was 127% more expensive and returns to January levels. However, it continues to be below the highest value in the series, registered in July 2022 when the difference was 173.7%.

In which products is the biggest price difference between Argentina and Uruguay?

The largest price difference occurs in the category Miscellaneous Assets (which includes the hygiene basket) where it reaches 254%; followed by Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco with 220%; Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages with a difference in the order of 159% and Home’s productswith 153%.

The Food item, however, is the most important within the Border Price Indicator since it represents 49.05% of it. Specifically in that division, the price difference widened 13% in May compared to the previous measurement.

However, pointed out the Economic Observatory of the UCU in Salto, for 12 items (sweet cookies, powdered milk, oil and tomato pulp, among them), the difference was significantly reduced as a result of the inflationary process in Argentina.

“The prices in Argentina of the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages division registered an increase of 10.8% in the month of April. In the same period in Uruguay, the variation in the price of food was 1.93%,” the report states.

Since September 2021, the price difference for the most important division of the Border Price Indicator has always exceeded 100%. On average, from then until May, Salto has been 153% more expensive than Concordia.

In the hygiene basketthe price difference reaches 353% for deodorant, 331% for shampoo, 240% for toothpaste, 236% for toilet soap and 120% for toilet paper.
