There were 151 passengers on the train, 33 of whom were taken to hospitals with suspected smoke inhalation. Governor Anton Mattle (ÖVP) spoke of “luck in misfortune”.

The fire in the Terfens railway tunnel in the Unterinntaltrasse in the Fritzens area (district of Innsbruck-Land) broke out around 8:45 p.m. The night train towards Hamburg/Amsterdam was immediately stopped in the tunnel and an emergency call was made. At around 9:00 p.m., the Tyrol control center triggered a major alarm, and fire brigade, rescue and police forces from several districts immediately started extinguishing and evacuating. Due to the heavy smoke development, the evacuation of the passengers – which was completed around 11 p.m. – was only possible with fire escape hoods.

It is thanks to the quick readiness of the blue light organizations and the authorities that there was no disaster, said Mattle. Around 700 emergency services would have enabled a professional and smooth operation.

Those passengers who did not require medical care were taken to Innsbruck by bus during the night, where sleeping accommodation and food were provided. The onward journey of the approximately 50 passengers who were currently still in Innsbruck is “being organized”, it said on Thursday morning. Also in the morning, the night train that had caught fire was recovered and pulled back to Innsbruck Central Station. According to the ÖBB, there were no traffic restrictions on Thursday “because rail traffic can be diverted”.
