The passengers, many of them on their way home after the holidays, faced significant problems as a result, as reported by Italian media. Several flights had to be diverted. The flames were fanned by the strong wind. Firefighting planes and helicopters were deployed to extinguish the fires.

Trapani Airport in western Sicily was temporarily closed on Sunday due to a fire. In July, the airport in the Sicilian capital of Palermo had to be closed for a day due to a major fire.
