The observation by children that a man was said to have fallen into the Raab near the train station on Wednesday in Feldbach in southeast Styria and was aborted was fabricated. According to the police, the minors between the ages of eight and ten became increasingly entangled in contradictions during individual interviews on Thursday until they admitted that they had invented the fall. They wanted to have a joke with their supervisor.
The emergency services initially continued to search for the alleged victim with around 100 people on Thursday. The action ended around midday. The children’s statements initially sounded credible. Clothing and a tent were also seized on the banks of the Raab, according to the police.
According to the police, the investigation has not been completed. In this context, the Styrian State Police Directorate pointed out the obligation to reimburse costs in the event of “false emergency reports” and announced that it would initiate an examination of such claims in this case.
