The 42-year-old and her ten-month-old son had to be resuscitated and flown to hospitals by emergency helicopter, and three firefighters also suffered smoke inhalation.
The emergency call about the fire in Leopold-Ferstl-Gasse was received at 1:15 p.m. Fortunately, due to the nearby fire station at Spitz, the emergency services were quickly on the scene, where the stairwell was already heavily smoked and the mother and child were also in the smoke-filled room Stuck in the elevator car. Both were quickly freed and taken to a safe area, where both were resuscitated by the firefighters and the Vienna professional rescue service.
The professional rescue service, which was on site with several teams, also looked after the three firefighters. The fire was extinguished using breathing apparatus; more than ten emergency vehicles were involved.
