Take yourself back to Rohrbach in the early 1960s. For many people, a trip to Linz was both exciting and unique and a rarity. No talk of a powerful B127. For the vast majority of people, education at an academic level was simply not affordable or impossible to achieve in the tough everyday working lives. Anyone who wanted to graduate had to go to boarding school. Happy was the one who could afford it.

Against this background, it is a true success story that began in 1960 with the founding of the association to build a middle school for the Rohrbach district. It was Rohrbach’s judge at the time, Karl Auzinger, who pulled the strings in the club and never let up. Today he is considered the main initiator of the Rohrbach high school. After five years of negotiations with the Ministry of Education, the Mühlviertler’s persistence paid off. So the long-awaited lessons began on September 12, 1963 with a first, a third and a fourth grade. The 60th anniversary will be celebrated with a ceremony in December.

Difficult early years

“You have to imagine that back then only a small proportion of children had the opportunity to attend a secondary school,” remembers high school director Nikolaus Stelzer. The parents of the first high school students often even had to organize their own transport. On Saturday, which was the traditional teaching day at the time, there was no bus at all.

Long search for a hostel

By the way, the new school was looking for a place to stay for a long time. At first the middle school, as the high school was called at the time, was housed in the new elementary school building, and later in today’s BBS building on Akademiestrasse. It was not until 1979 that the company moved to the current building, which has since been renovated several times.

Incidentally, Nikolaus Stelzer is the fifth director since the high school was founded, after Erich Ettmayr, Alois Sonnleitner, Wilfried Dunzendorfer and Franz Andexlinger. He takes the opportunity of the anniversary to remember the pioneers of the Rohrbach high school. There is also a memorial plaque at the entrance to the school building dedicated to two of the early men: Karl Auzinger and Erich Ettmayer. Karl Auzinger raised the mood for a high school in the proponent committee for the establishment of a middle school and remained loyal to the school as the first parents’ association chairman. Erich Ettmayer was the first director of the high school and found it to be by no means a “finished” school. There was only one regular teacher, the blessed Pastor Albert Dorninger. Others first had to be “attracted” from the central room. There was a lack of teaching materials and improvisation was required every day. Today, of course, the Bundesgymnasium and Bundesrealgymnasium present themselves as modern educational institutions. “We offer our students a comprehensive general education over an eight-year educational process and prepare them in the best possible way for all studies and training,” says the school’s mission statement.

Director Stelzer also points out the wide range of possibilities: “We provide young people with a sound linguistic, scientific, artistic and information technology education. With a variety of offers tailored to their aptitudes, we specifically promote the individual talents and interests of our students.” Key qualifications such as communication skills, the ability to work in a team, the ability to criticize and networked thinking as well as the ability to self-manage should also be promoted in the future.
