15 kilograms of cannabis, two and a half kilograms of hallucinogenic mushrooms, plus 330 grams of hashish and 50 grams of coke: the police have taken drugs with a street value of well over 150,000 euros out of circulation in the Wels area since August. Officials from the State Criminal Police Office (LKA), in collaboration with the Wels-Land criminal service group, managed to strike a blow against the drug trade in Upper Austria, as was announced on Thursday after the months-long investigation was completed.
Professional plantation
The investigation began in the community of Weißkirchen an der Traun (Wels-Land district): During a house search in August, the police found a cannabis plantation in a single-family home that, according to the LKA, was “highly professionally” equipped, including an irrigation and exhaust system and an automatic lighting system.

In a basement room, a father (49) and his 19-year-old son had grown a good 1,500 cannabis plants on two-story shelves, and 650 were in flower. The police also seized large quantities of cannabis herb, hashish and mushrooms.

Both suspects were arrested and transferred to the Wels prison. It was proven that they produced 18 kilograms of cannabis and more than two and a half kilograms of hallucinogenic mushrooms. The police tracked down the men after interviewing the accused. The father-son team ran a brisk trade in addictive substances.

Three major buyers arrested
A little later, three major buyers clicked the handcuffs: a 47-year-old and a 49-year-old, both from Marchtrenk (Wels-Land district) and a 35-year-old from Salzburg are said to have sold the drugs. More than a kilogram of cannabis herb and smaller amounts of hashish, cocaine and drug money were found in the Salzburger’s apartment. The 47-year-old is also said to have run a smaller cannabis cultivation facility himself.
Cocaine dealer caught
In the course of further investigations, cannabis herb, cocaine and cash were also seized from a 42-year-old from Wels. The analysis of chats on his cell phone led the officers to a 61-year-old cocaine dealer from Slovenia who is said to have brought two kilograms of cocaine into the country and resold it. Two other sub-distributors aged 34 were also arrested.
Negotiation in January
In total, there were seven house searches and nine arrests in the case; some of those involved are still in custody, the investigators told the OÖN. The main hearing at the Wels regional court is planned for January, and the suspects face up to 15 years in prison.
