Thirteen civilians and one member of the Indian security forces were killed during a military operation in the village of Otting in Nagaland state in the northeast of the country after the villagers were mistaken for insurgents. This was reported on December 5 by the NDTV TV channel.

The incident reportedly took place in the area between the villages of Otting and Thiru, when several workers were returning home in a pickup truck from a coal mine on the evening of December 4. Acting on a tip, the security forces planned an ambush on the road between the villages, but mistook the villagers for insurgents.
