A 7.3 magnitude earthquake caused panic in Indonesia

The earthquake was registered after midnight in Argentina and had its epicenter north of the Flores island, a hundred kilometers from the city of Maumere, of 80,000 inhabitants, with a depth of 18.5 km, reported the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

“I was in the field. People, in panic, began to run. I’m still scared, “said Nuraini, a resident of Adonara Island, in the eastern Flores region, according to the AFP agency.

Initially, no deaths or significant damage were reported in the areas affected by the earthquake, but the authorities requested caution as several aftershocks were registered later.

One person was injured in Manggarai (in the eastern lesser Sunda islands) and a school was damaged on Selayar Island, disaster management agency spokesman Abdul Muhari said.

Images arriving from the affected region showed Indonesians fleeing their homes, some with young children, and traffic jams of motorcycles and cars heading for higher areas.

“I was looking at my phone when the shaking occurred. I felt it for 30 seconds. It was strong,” said Alwan, a resident of Buton, in the southeast of the island of Sulawesi.

Romanus Woga, deputy director of Sikka Regency, the district closest to the epicenter of the earthquake, told CNN that he felt four or five major tremors that prompted people in the city of Maumere to run from their homes.

People living near coastal areas had fled to higher ground for a few hours. There was a tsunami warning that then ceased.

Indonesia is in the “Ring of Fire”, a band around the Pacific Ocean that triggers frequent earthquakes and volcanic activity. It is one of the most seismically active areas on the planet.
