eww has a new large district heating customer: The Wels location of the Wels-Grieskirchen Clinic has recently been purchasing a large portion of its space heating from the municipal provider. By switching from gas to district heating, which in Wels comes 100 percent from waste heat from the waste incineration plant and renewable sources, the location will in future emit 1,200 tons less CO2 annually. In the future, eww will be able to provide the clinic with up to five million kilowatt hours per year – as much as 700 average households in Wels consume in the same period.

“The most important arguments were security of supply, price stability and the environmental aspect,” says Dietbert Timmerer, managing director of the clinic. The switch is an important building block in the hospital’s efforts to operate in an economically and ecologically sustainable manner. The measures taken would be constantly ensured through accompanying energy monitoring.

The prerequisite for the connection was the construction of the “North Ring”, which was completed in 2022: eww has opened up the north of the city with the second large main line to the waste incineration plant, which will enable 55,000 people in Wels to be supplied with district heating in the long term. “With the massive expansion of district heating, we are making a significant contribution to the energy transition and climate protection,” says eww board member Florian Niedersüß.

Every year, eww connects around 150 properties, from single-family homes to large businesses such as hospitals. The high pace will not only be maintained because of the strong demand, says eww board member Wolfgang Nöstlinger: “We invest several million euros every year to expand and densify the network. In doing so, we take responsibility for the city’s security of supply.”
