Does Bad Ischl need a new parking deck?

If the “Future Ischl” list is anything to go by, there will soon be movement in parking. At least when it comes to a new deck on Imperial Island. The monument office has no objections, and under certain conditions no reasons for failure can be expected from the water district. “The project is ready for decision,” says City Councilor Hannes Bauer (Future Ischl). And Vice Mayor Hannes Mathes even reports in a broadcast about a “rapprochement” with Mayor Ines Schiller (SP). Mathes and Schiller agreed to “get this project off the ground at the next opportunity.” But the mayor doesn’t know anything about it.

“For me, a parking deck is a no-go. That’s what I’ve always told the economy. There’s never been any approach,” she says. Bad Ischl has an underground car park that is “underutilized”, and issues such as affordable housing or the renovation of schools are a much more important task for the municipality than building a parking deck in the city center.

“If we motivate those who have an annual pass for the Kaiserinsel parking lot to use the parking spaces on the outskirts of the city and install a shuttle with which they can get to the city center, we would no longer have space problems,” says Schiller. On April 8th there will also be a discussion with the business community due to the acute parking shortage. However, Schiller rules out an agreement on a new parking deck.

Mathes, on the other hand, says that the imperial city needs at least 400 additional parking spaces. In autumn 2022, Josef Zeppetzauer presented a project he had planned to the building committee: a parking deck with up to four levels – 416 car parking spaces, electric charging stations and areas for motorbikes and bicycles, including 200 PV modules on the roof. Estimated cost: ten million euros.
