The Wuppertal public prosecutor announced this on Wednesday. A father, a mother and two children from a Bulgarian family were killed in the fire on Monday morning. Another nine people were taken to hospitals with injuries of varying severity.
According to the information, the fire started in the staircase of the old building. The fire spread to the roof within five minutes due to a so-called chimney effect. “Clear remains of an accelerant” were found in the wooden stairwell. Based on this finding, “intentional arson” must be assumed.
Residents jumped out of windows
When the fire brigade arrived, the wooden stairwell was already fully ablaze, meaning the escape route was blocked. Several residents jumped out of the windows in panic. The fire department deployed up to 120 emergency services.
Fire experts inspected the house, which had become uninhabitable, on Tuesday to clarify the cause of the fire. The first assessment by the experts was “clear,” the public prosecutor said. Murder or attempted murder is being investigated. Wuppertal public prosecutor Heribert Kaune-Gebhardt said there was no evidence of a xenophobic motive.
Right-wing extremist attack in 1993
In a right-wing extremist attack that left five dead and 14 injured in May 1993, four young men set fire to the house of a large Turkish family in Solingen. A 27-year-old woman jumped to her death from the window, an 18-year-old and three girls aged four, nine and 13 died in the flames. In 1995, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court sentenced three of the perpetrators to a maximum of ten years in juvenile detention and a 25-year-old to 15 years in prison.
