Pope celebrated Pentecost Mass and renewed appeal for peace

Pope Francis

“We do not give up, but continue to speak of peace to those who want war, of forgiveness to those who sow revenge, of welcome and solidarity to those who bar the door and raise barriers,” the pope said .

“We will not allow ourselves to be intimidated by difficulties, nor by ridicule, nor by opposition, which today as yesterday is never lacking,” Francis said. Several hundred believers and cardinals sat in the pews and chairs around the altar. The pope, who made a day visit to Verona on Saturday, appeared to be in good spirits.

50 days after Easter, Christians celebrate Pentecost and the Easter season comes to an end. It is one of the high festivals in the Catholic church year. The festival commemorates the so-called language miracle at Pentecost. According to biblical tradition, the Holy Spirit descended on the disciples and they began speaking in foreign languages. As a result, they became a unit and were able to proclaim the message of Jesus to other people without a language barrier. Pentecost is therefore sometimes referred to as the “birthday of the church”.
