Spain closes the year with fewer femicides, but the number of minors killed has doubled

In addition, data from the Ministry of Equality highlighted that the number of women killed by vicarious violence also fell, as the phenomenon in which family members are attacked to harm the main object of the aggression is known.

This year there were four murdered by vicarious violence less than in 2020 and up to 30 less than the 73 that were counted in 2010, which is, so far, the year with the highest gender violence recorded in Spain.

To such an extent, this type of violence became a problem that the two parties of the ruling coalition, the PSOE and United We Can, promised to incorporate the term vicarious violence into the Comprehensive Law against Gender Violence next year.

Of the total of 43 femicides this year, government statistics highlighted that 26 of the women lived with their attacker and 21 were in a relationship with him.

In addition, most of them (15) were between 31 and 40 years old, and another 10 between 41 and 50. Also, most of them (24) had Spanish nationality.

Finally, nine of the women killed by gender violence had already legally denounced their attackers.
