The Executive Branch initiated a trust for the generation of rules that allow vehicles to obtain an economic benefit.

The government announced a new benefit for electric buses used for public transportation as a way to counteract the diesel subsidy for fuel vehicles, while the Municipality of Montevideo announced the purchase of new buses.

It’s been more than ten years since Uruguay The period of electrification of the public transport, a measure that comes hand in hand with the first energy transition achieved in the country and that coincides with the intentions to achieve a second one in a few years.

However, the benefits provided by the government to traditional transportation prevent further progress in the implementation of electric public transportation. One of them is the subsidy to gasoil, imposed in 2006 with the aim of making the value of the ticket cheaper for citizens, according to the economist. Gonzalo Marquezspecialized in Mobility, Transport and Energy at Radio Carve.

In that sense, the government decided to create a “escrow of sustainable mobility, creating a series of rules that will allow eclectic buses to also begin to receive the resources that today were only destined for diesel buses.” In this way, according to the specialist, the capital of the Uruguay In just 10 years, it would be possible to have 100% electric buses in public transportation in the metropolitan area.

More progress for Montevideo

During the World Environment Day At the beginning of this month, the Municipality of Montevideo announced the purchase of twenty electric buses, which would mean a carbon emission saving of 64 tons per vehicle per year. They will be distributed among different transport companies: six for UCOT, nine for COETC and five for EAT.

For its part, in the remainder of the year, it is expected that the commune will be able to incorporate 200 more vehicles, which would position Montevideo at the regional level in terms of electric vehicles, equal to the capital of Chili, Santiago, and the Colombian city of Bogota.
