“We didn’t expect it at all,” says Katharina Platzer, the new mother of this year’s Upper Austrian New Year’s baby. “But that doesn’t matter, we’re just happy that we’re all doing so well,” says the 26-year-old from Behamberg in the Lower Austrian district of Amstetten.
Her little Miriam was born on January 1st at 0.39 a.m. in the Pyhrn-Eisenwurzen-Klinikum in Steyr with a birth weight of 3600 grams and a length of 51 centimeters. And she was obviously in a hurry.
Premature due date
After all, the due date would not have been until tomorrow, Tuesday, says the mother with a laugh. “We only went to the hospital on New Year’s Eve on suspicion. I was unsure whether it might start.” The doctors’ answer was all the clearer: “They said we should definitely stay here because it won’t be that long.” Almost nine hours later, Miriam saw the light of day. And not only the – earlier – date was a surprise for Katharina Platzer and her partner Simon, but also the gender of their first child. “During pregnancy, we weren’t told whether it was a girl or a boy. We are definitely very satisfied now,” says the 26-year-old retail saleswoman.
The hype around her New Year’s baby is “something special”, even though the young mum doesn’t let it bother her: “I’m just overwhelmed that our daughter is here now.” And the fact that the birth canceled the New Year’s Eve celebration, which was planned to be very calm anyway, doesn’t bother her, as she says: “That can be made up for.”
The well-wishers were also joined by Governor Thomas Stelzer and his deputy, State Health Councilor Christine Haberlander (both VP). However, due to the corona, they only conveyed their congratulations virtually: “This year, too, everything is different with the New Year’s baby.” As usual, they would have liked to visit little Miriam and her parents personally. But everyone’s health comes first. “That’s why we wish little Miriam a good start in life from afar,” she told the young family.
This year’s New Year’s Eve baby, little Ariz, was born at the Mödling Clinic with a precision landing at midnight. A few minutes later, little Lara followed in Vienna, who was born at 0.04 a.m. in the Favoriten Clinic. (nieg)
