In 1935 the Neugebauer bookstore was founded on the Linzer Taubenmarkt, and Melanie Hofinger took over the business at the beginning of 2020. The young entrepreneur is known beyond the borders of Linz: She has been running the Veritas bookstore in Harrachstrasse since 2018, and her Melanie Hofinger GmbH now has seven stores.
The time since the takeover and especially the time during the corona lockdowns has been put to good use in the Neugebauer bookstore. “Everything new and still traditional” is the motto under which the further development of the business stands. The bookstore is breaking new ground by offering e-books and e-readers, and there are now digital displays with info screens. The existing special offers in the fields of law, history, politics, travel and fiction have also been expanded over the past two years.
After some retirement, the team at the traditional bookstore has also presented itself changed and rejuvenated. This has been supported by an apprentice since 2020 after the apprenticeship training started again (we work closely with foundations, the AMS and Caritas). For Hofinger, this traditional apprenticeship is an important one for the future of the book world: “The passion to work with books, to advise customers personally and to know what is in a book cannot be digitized in the future either.”
