Odermatt won Adelboden-RTL ahead of Feller and Pinturault

The Swiss local hero also withstood the attack by Manuel Feller at the ski classic on Saturday. The Tyrolean catapulted himself from fifth to second place with a splendid running record in the second run. On Odermatt, who has now won four of the previous five giant slalom runs of the season, he was 0.48 seconds short in the end.

For Feller it was the best result of the season. In the giant slalom runs in Val d’Isere and Alta Badia, the 29-year-old was already on the podium in third place. “A podium in front of the backdrop is of course something very special,” said Feller in a first ORF interview. Despite the corona pandemic, 12,300 spectators cheered the first Swiss home win in the Adelboden giant slalom since Marc Berthod in 2008.

Odermatt had already led at halftime and extended its lead in the overall World Cup. “He’s the best,” said Feller. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old Swiss had his problems in the second run with the extremely difficult route. “It didn’t feel that good,” said Feller after his trip. “But nobody felt really good down here.”

Skiing is fun, stressed Feller. “Now I’ve finished the topic with the first group of starters. That is definitely good for the Olympics.” Third place was six hundredths of a second behind the Tyrolean Alexis Pinturault, who won both Adelboden giant slalom runs last year. Marco Schwarz finished ninth as the second best Austrian, 2.54 seconds behind. Patrick Feurstein and Dominik Raschner finished 15th and 16th respectively.

Stefan Brennsteiner fell in the first round and was eliminated. The Salzburg resident was surprised “that I skied so badly, especially in the middle part very badly”. When he failed, he spoke of a “timing problem”. Adelboden was already the last chance to recommend himself again for the Olympics in Beijing in the giant slalom. On Sunday (10.30 a.m. and 1.30 p.m. / live ORF 1) a slalom is on the program on the Chuenisbärgli.
