Iran imposed sanctions against 51 US citizens

Iranian authorities have imposed new sanctions against 51 US citizens who took part in the operation to assassinate Iranian General Qasem Soleimani. This was announced on January 8 at the country’s Foreign Ministry.

“The persons indicated in the list of sanctions participated in the decision-making, planning, organization, financing, support, as well as in the leadership or implementation of the terrorist act (against Suleimani),” the message says.

The list includes, among others, the chairman of the committee of chiefs of staff Mark Millie and former adviser to the president of the United States for national security Robert O’Brien.

A year earlier, Tehran added to its sanctions lists US President Donald Trump, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin, and acting US Defense Secretary Christopher Miller; CIA Chief Gina Haspel; and a number of former officials.

Soleimani was killed in Iraq on January 3, 2020, in an American air raid on Baghdad airport. He commanded the Al-Quds Special Forces of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), organizing operations of the Iranian Armed Forces abroad. In 2019, Washington recognized the IRGC as a terrorist group.

The Pentagon said after the general’s assassination that the attack was authorized by Trump “to protect US personnel overseas.” The US Department of Justice called this murder legitimate, considering it self-defense.
