Three Turkish military killed in explosion on border with Syria

The explosion on the border with Syria killed three Turkish soldiers. This was announced on January 8 by the Turkish Ministry of National Defense.

“Three of our servicemen were killed by an improvised explosive device planted by terrorists in the Akchakale region of Sanliurfa province,” the statement said.

The Ministry of Defense released the names and surnames of the victims.

In 2017, a de-escalation zone was created in northwestern Syria. Since March 6, 2020, a ceasefire regime has been in effect there after the agreements reached between Russia and Turkey, but terrorists regularly violate the ceasefire. Since 2017, Turkey has conducted three military operations in the northern regions of Syria. A security buffer zone was created between the cities of Azaz and Jerablus north of Aleppo, Afrin was occupied, and the border areas east of the Euphrates River were taken under control.

Russia and Turkey agreed on joint actions to resolve the situation in the north-eastern regions of Syria. Russian military police and Syrian troops were brought into areas bordering the Turkish operation zone, and Kurdish forces were given 150 hours to free the 30-kilometer zone from the border with Turkey. The withdrawal of Kurdish units took place in accordance with the agreements, Turkey and Russia began joint patrols.
