Kiev political scientist Kirill Molchanov said that the launch of Nord Stream 2 will be beneficial for Ukraine, as it helps to reduce exchange prices for gas and tariffs for industry and business.
“I’ll say more, this will be very beneficial for Ukraine, Ukrainian Naftogaz, because then we will be able to buy gas not at these quotations, at one thousand or one and a half dollars, but at some more lifting price. Thus, we will be able to reduce the tariff for industry, for business, “- said Molchanov on the air of the Nash TV channel.
The expert added that it is also beneficial for France and Germany to put the pipeline into operation, since the cost on the stock exchanges will drop sharply, and fuel will be sold in large volumes.
He also considered Kiev’s demands to extend the contract for the transit of Russian gas “political schizophrenia”. The politician recalled that at first Ukraine announced the attack of the “aggressor country”, and then demanded to continue deliveries to Europe and pay for it. It looks like not bipolar disorder, the expert concluded.
On January 7, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba in a telephone conversation discussed ways to counter the threats allegedly emanating from the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline and a comprehensive “package of containing Russia.”
On the same day it became known that the commissioning of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline could be postponed for political reasons. According to experts, disputes about “excessive dependence” on Russia in the issue of gas supplies may be provoked, among other things, by a decrease in the transit of Russian gas to Europe in the second half of the year.
On December 29, the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, reported to Russian President Vladimir Putin on the full readiness of the SP-2 for the start of operation. At the same time, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said that certification of the SP-2 should be completed by the end of the first half of 2022 at the most. If colleagues are interested in this and make the certification faster, then it is possible to start deliveries much earlier, he added.
The construction of SP-2 was completed on September 10. It was built from Russia to Germany along the Baltic seabed with the aim of direct gas supplies to Europe. The EU countries mainly support the project and participate in its implementation. The Baltic states, Poland, the USA and Ukraine are opposed.
On November 16, the German regulator suspended the certification of Nord Stream 2 AG as an independent operator of SP-2. The procedure can be continued when a subsidiary company for the German part of the pipeline is created in Germany. The German Ministry of Energy called the suspension of certification a regulatory issue and an intermediate stage in this procedure, adding that this will not affect the energy supply of Germany.
