Lavrov pointed to the desire of the Russian Federation to have more constructive relations with Germany

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, at a meeting with his German counterpart Annalena Burbock on January 18, said that Moscow would like to have more constructive relations with Berlin.

“Of course, we would like to see a more constructive state of Russian-German relations, we are aimed at overcoming the accumulated problems with all members of the new government and are invariably interested in good relations with Germany on the principles of mutual respect, equality, and consideration of mutual interests,” the minister emphasized at the beginning meetings.

In response, Burbock pointed out that relations with Russia are important for the new German government. Berlin believes that there is no alternative to good and stable relations between the parties, she added.

Burbock clarified that she intends to discuss with her Russian colleague topics that “cast a shadow” on the relations of the countries.

In mid-December, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said that the German authorities were ready to build a constructive dialogue with Russia, as well as seek mutual understanding and reduce escalation. At the same time, he noted that this should not be assessed as a unilateral new “Eastern policy” of Berlin.

As the press secretary of the Russian leader Dmitry Peskov noted, the Kremlin expects that constructive relations will develop between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the new German Chancellor Scholz. He expressed the hope that the German side would adhere to the lack of alternative dialogue to resolve even the most complex differences.

Olaf Scholz was elected the new Chancellor of Germany following a vote in the Bundestag on 8 December. A day earlier, the leaders of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), Alliance 90/The Greens, and the Free Democratic Party (FDP) signed a coalition agreement.

Parliamentary elections in Germany were held on 26 September. The SPD won the election with 25.7% of the vote.
