“I believe that it will erupt again in the coming days, weeks or months,” Australian broadcaster ABC quoted geochemist Oliver Nebel from the renowned Monash University in Melbourne as saying on Tuesday. At the same time, however, it is impossible to predict whether there will be another outbreak of the same intensity.
The problem is that the magma chamber in the earth’s crust can be dozens of kilometers deep and nobody knows how much magma is still in the chamber. “The only thing we can say is that the volcano has erupted now, so there’s little chance that there’s a lot more magma underneath,” Nebel explained.
However, that is not a guarantee: in the past there have been several serious volcanic eruptions in a row.
