“As of today, our intelligence services and those of our partners indicate that there is no Russian troop build-up evidencing an imminent attack,” Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov told Ukrainian television ICTV.
“We see no reason to assert today a large-scale offensive against our country”, said the secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Alexei Danilov, at a press conference.
Danilov said that Ukraine has followed Russian troop movements since 2014, adding that such a phenomenon might surprise Kiev’s foreign partners but not the local government, according to the Sputnik news agency.
The official admitted that Ukraine is receiving “planes” that “help” the country “with weapons for protection”, but assured that Kiev “has no intention of attacking anyone”.
Reznikov and Danilov made these statements after the spokesman for the United States Department of Defense, John Kirby, affirmed that Washington believes that Russia “does not currently have the intention of a de-escalation”, for which it put 8,500 military personnel on alert. .
Earlier, the president of Ukraine, Volodimir Zelenski, ratified his commitment to diplomacy and negotiation, although he warned that his government is prepared “for anything”.
“We are working for a total de-escalation of the situation and to move towards a peaceful agreement; we are prepared for everything,” said the president after presiding over a meeting of the National Security and Defense Council.
Zelenski maintained that, thanks to the work of Ukraine’s diplomacy and military forces, as well as the country’s partners, “everything is under control” and “there is no reason for alarmism,” according to the local Unian news agency.
