The private Austrian fiber optic infrastructure company (öGIG), a subsidiary of Allianz, intends to invest almost one billion euros (928.7 million euros) in fiber optic expansion in Austria over the next four years, the company announced on Tuesday.
By 2030, one million households and companies should be supplied. For the national economy, the project will bring gross added value of 634.2 million euros in the short term.
An investment of around 120 million euros has been budgeted for Upper Austria, with the lion’s share going to Carinthia.
The infrastructure company does not deal directly with end customers, but provides various Internet providers with the fiber optic network for fast Internet. At the end of 2021, the öGIG counted 35,000 completed connections. By the end of the current year, she wants to increase the number to 70,000, and by 2030 there should be one million connections. The öGIG also wants to work closely with the national companies.
The money comes from the owner, Allianz. This gives you an advantage over competitors, since no lengthy subsidies are necessary, said Managing Director Hartwig Tauber. Up to 2.5 billion euros in capital are required for further expansion plans by 2030. The öGIG was founded in 2019 and currently employs 60 people. The staff should be increased.
