Britain is concerned about the strengthening of the presence of the Russian Federation in Latin America

The strengthening of Russia’s ties with the countries of Latin America is of concern to the British authorities, as this leads to an increase in the Russian presence in the region. The corresponding statement on Tuesday, February 1, was made by the Deputy head of the British Ministry of Defense, James Hippie, during a speech at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

According to him, the British authorities are watching the actions of Russia in Venezuela, Cuba and Nicaragua.

“The Russian presence in the region is undeniable, we are talking about a meaningful [политике]”, – said Hippie.

He added that the situation “poses a particular threat” to Britain’s allies, including the US.

On January 27, State Department spokesman Ned Price said that in the event of a Russian military presence in Cuba, the United States’ response would be swift and decisive.

A day earlier, it became known that Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed, during telephone conversations with the leaders of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, issues of cooperation in all areas, including military-technical.

In addition, the Kremlin expressed hope for holding regular meetings on the development of military cooperation with the countries of Latin America.

On January 22, Russian Ambassador to Venezuela Sergei Melik-Bagdasarov noted that in the event of increased US pressure, Caracas and Moscow could increase military cooperation. It was about the port infrastructure, which is well developed in Venezuela. At the same time, according to the Russian ambassador, the deployment of Russian military bases in Venezuela is impossible according to the constitution of the Latin American republic.

Earlier, on January 20, Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone conversations with his Venezuelan counterpart Nicolas Maduro. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that bilateral Russian-Venezuelan cooperation “is of a very multifaceted and partnership nature.”

On January 17, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov answered a question about the possibility of deploying the Russian Armed Forces in Latin America. He stressed that “Russia is thinking about how to ensure its own security.”
