It is a development that has been emerging for years: the number of those who are supposed to enable probation for re -entry to life is increasing. In 2024, the Austrian Association NEUSTART with 12,300 clients recorded an increase of 3.5 percent. It has been 13 percent in the past ten years. However, the reason for the increased arrangement of probation assistance is not an increasing crime. On the contrary, the final convicts even declined last year.

Recognized measure

Rather, probation for preventing further crimes among judges and judges is becoming increasingly well received, says Neustart Managing Director Alfred Kohlberger. The Austrian population also shares the assessment that social work has preventive character. At a representative survey carried out in January 2025, 72 percent said that the work of restarting to more security in society contributed.

“Two thirds remain unpunished”

In Upper Austria, the Neustart association currently looks after around 2,050 delinquent. “Our client level has been continuously high since previous years,” says head Josef Landerl. The probation assistance is a recognized measure with the judge with which the association is in close contact. “Two thirds of our clients are no longer delinquent during their childcare period,” emphasizes Landerl, “we are very proud of this number.”
