“Despite the multitude of crises, the Austrian brewing industry in all its diversity is incredibly resilient.” This was said by Karl Schwarz, chairman of the breweries association, on Monday in Vienna at the presentation of the figures in 2024.
The total breweries (domestic heel and export) amounted to 10.09 million hectoliters, an increase of 1.1 percent in 2023. While sales in Germany remained stable at 8.53 million hectoliters, export rose by nine percent 1.56 million hectoliters. In Austria, the cost pressure on the breweries through expensive energy, high wage degrees and consumption retention in catering shows. Nevertheless, beer from Austria is required abroad.
Less beer consumption worldwide
The per capita consumption remained stable at around 103 liters last year. Beer consumption is declining worldwide, says association chairman Schwarz. Lifestyles changed, the society of older ones, and consumers were generally faced with a variety of crises and conflicts and therefore kept less. “The gastronomy has not yet recovered from the Corona-Delle and the wave of closure,” says Schwarz.
