As the listed sugar and starch group announced today, the supervisory board decided to stop sugar production in Leopoldsdorf in Lower Austria and in Hrušovany in the Czech Republic with immediate effect.
According to Agrana, increasing production costs, increasing competitive pressure through the decline in sugar consumption in the EU, market liberalizations (Mercosur and Ukraine) and regulatory requirements have made the continuation of production at two locations in Austria and Czech Republic economically intolerable.

The Leopoldsdorf location remains as a logistics hub. Sugar is to be stored and packed there. The other use of the 70 -hectare plant area is still being discussed.
270 employees affected
According to Agrana, the closures of the two sugar productions affect around 270 employees, including around 120 in Leopoldsdorf. Agrana provides “extensive support measures” for those affected: This includes retraining and qualification programs, possibilities for taking over jobs at other Agrana locations as well as individual severance payments and advice on professional reorientation.
