Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov on February 8 commented on the statement by the official representative of the Turkish leader Recep Tayyip Erdogan – Ibrahim Kalin that the republic is preparing for the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“There is such a visit in the future, as we have repeatedly said, Putin and Erdogan have agreed on this visit. They agreed that the visit would take place when the schedules of the presidents and epidemiological conditions allow. There are no exact dates yet, but they will be agreed in a timely manner through diplomatic channels,” he said.
At the same time, the Kremlin representative assessed the prospect of a meeting between the Russian leader and the President of Ukraine in Turkey.
“As for the meeting with Zelensky, a priori no one refuses it, if this meeting really helps to cut this Gordian knot of the situation in the southeast of the country. First you need to understand, to meet for what purpose, on what issues and focusing on what result. This understanding has not matured yet,” he said.
Earlier, on January 27, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu noted that Putin’s visit to Turkey is possible after his visit to the opening ceremony of the 2022 Olympics in Beijing. Whereas on January 21, Erdogan said that there is a possibility of telephone conversations with the President of the Russian Federation.
On January 20, Erdogan confirmed Ankara’s desire to hold a meeting between Putin and Zelensky on its territory. The Turkish leader noted that he was upset by the formed “atmosphere of war” between Moscow and Kiev. He added that a meeting between Putin and Zelensky could be arranged “eye to eye, face to face.”
Peskov said that Moscow would only welcome if the Turkish partners could push Kiev to implement the Minsk agreements.
