Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have been friends for more than three decades and, unlikely as it may seem, the two legends’ strong bond extends far beyond finance, big business and the stock market.
With fortunes that exceed $100 billion, the fifth and sixth richest man in the world, respectively -according to real-time data from Forbes magazine- Gates and Buffett have learned to master the markets, thanks in part to the extensive knowledge they share with each other.
And apparently that’s a topic even AI bots are interested in, judging by a recent interview between Microsoft co-founder, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, and an AI chatbot similar to ChatGPT. .
The bot asked Gates what was the best advice he had ever received and how it had influenced him throughout his career.. In response, the 67-year-old tycoon recalled some words from his old friend.
“Warren Buffett talked about how what’s important, at the end of the day, is what friends really think of you and how strong those friendships are,” said Gates, who co-founded The Giving Pledge with the Omaha Oracle for people to richest in the world donate at least half of their wealth to charitable causes.
In addition to occasionally getting together to play bridge and golf, Gates and Buffett regularly exchange their best lessons, both professionally and in life. From the 92-year-old billionaire, Gates has learned all he needs to know about investing, building wealth and managing time.
A friend, the best investment
But Gates consistently ranks Buffett’s friendship advice at the top of that list. “I’ve learned a lot from Warren over the past 25 years, but perhaps the most important thing is what friendship is all about,” he wrote on his blog in 2016.
“Though he maintains a hectic schedule, Warren finds time to cultivate friendships like few people I know,” she added. “He picks up the phone and calls to say hello. Regularly, he sends articles that he has read and that he thinks I will find interesting”.
Buffett often talks about the importance of choosing good friends and being a good friend. In his terms, that means surrounding yourself with “people who are better than yourself,” to learn from and be inspired by them, he said in a 2017 talk at Columbia University.
