Alert for Ethereum: another key date is coming

After The Merge, another date is coming up that is anticipated as a new milestone for the Ethereum mainnet. It will be on April 12 when the Shanghai update is activated.

After The Merge, another date is coming up that is anticipated as a new milestone for the main network of ethereum. It will be on April 12 when the shanghai update.

This change, also known as Shapella, will enable first-time withdrawals from the ethereum staking, after an experimental run by the developers, who have tested the hard fork on different testnets like Goerli and Sepolia, and other experimental frameworks.

Shanghai is Ethereum’s first upgrade after The Merge, which marked the blockchain’s consensus transition from Proof-of-Work (PoW) to Proof-of-Stake (PoS).

What changes with Shanghai for Ethereum?

The arrival of Shanghai means a series of updates to the blockchain, including Ethereum withdrawals in staking locked within the Beacon Chain, can be made progressively by validators.

Staking allows PoS networks to build a secure, participatory, and decentralized environment for a blockchain by using validators to secure the network and participate by locking ETH balances.

Currently, there are more than 17.9 million Ethereum locked, about 15% of the total supply of the cryptocurrency, while the number of validators exceeds 561 thousand, according to Dune data.
