There are traditions that deserve to continue in the 21st century. The carriages in Vienna are not one of them. Dozens of horses that eke out a living in Vienna’s city center and those tourists who can afford to roam the 1st district have no place in a modern city.

The current rule is that the horses are free of heat from 35 degrees Celsius. Now there are talks to lower this limit to 30 degrees. This debate falls short. Why should the kitschy carriages still exist? They are merely an attempt to present tourists with an image of Austria that has nothing to do with reality anyway. Vienna would be worth a trip even without a carriage. And it would smell better too.

Are carriages still up to date in the city? Yes, why not? We’re not closing the Sisi Museum either. It is surprising that a Green minister is raising this question. Instead of driving cars out of downtown Vienna, he targets horse-drawn carriages.

How many sidewalk cafés could there be if the nicest spots weren’t reserved for cars? Then the traffic load on the animals would also be reduced. Especially since the four-legged friends have a strong lobby behind them: they are allowed to work 18 days a month in Vienna, at 35 degrees there is no heat.

For the carriages, some of them not just fun for tourists, but a Viennese original, the ban would mean losing their job. And the horses? In Vienna they are eaten in some places as meat loaf.
