Even the best end does not justify the means

Even the best end does not justify the means

As I developed in that note, almost a decade ago, a program that encourages and facilitates finishing high school will significantly improve graduates’ job prospects. It is clear that today, in the knowledge society in which our young people have to interact in their adult lives, and after the strong desertion generated by the policies carried out during the pandemic, a program of these characteristics is still much more opportune than ten years ago.

But the program, as in 2014, is not aimed exclusively at the residents of CABA, but rather at all the inhabitants of the country and, of course, this will generate additional costs. They will surely not be significant, but it is not their magnitude that is relevant, but rather their origin.

Is the City Government authorized to finance the education of compatriots in other districts of the country? I think not, even though I couldn’t agree more with the objectives of the program.

A little over 30 years ago, on January 20, 1981, Ronald Reagan, in his inaugural address upon assuming the presidency, stated that: “our government has no power, except that which was granted to it by the people. The time has come to review and reverse the growth of government, which shows signs of having grown beyond the consent of the governed.”

Isn’t the fact that the government of the CABA relaunch a program of national scope, financed by the residents of the city, a clear illustration of this affirmation? I think so and it is healthy to admit it.

As deserving as an end is, and it’s hard to imagine a better program than Finish High School, the means matter too. If we want to build a different Argentina, we must not forget it.
